About David Baker Design

In design we take a journey.

Our journey begins with planning. Along the way we may follow an unexpected side-road and find ourselves somewhere we hadn’t imagined. New places yield interesting discoveries, curiosities and wonder. To me home design is much more than walls and wood, budgets and contracts. Home design begins with ideas and ends with smart choices for your investment and the long term well-being of your home.

I want your journey to be fun, informative and even a little challenging.

In the end you will have a beautiful home that you were a part of creating.

About David

David is a skilled designer dedicated to the creation of space and style for over 30 years. His extensive portfolio encompasses a complete scope of residential and commercial projects. Based in Calgary, David Baker Design works extensively in the Alberta, Okanagan and British Columbia Interior markets, bringing a unique and holistic approach to contemporary design.

Now an accomplished designer, David began his career in retail store display; a creative and dynamic landscape of new and captivating vignettes. With a hands-on approach, David soon took interest in the broader field of Architecture, focusing studies on Interior Design while working in contract residential construction. After graduating Mount Royal College in 1990, his combined artistic merit and technical design allowed David to work in Engineering and Architectural design in his early professional years.

Working as a young lead designer with the team of Richard Lindseth Architecture in the 1990’s, David composed many projects including The Kensington Riverside Inn, The Tinhorn Creek Winery and numerous notable residential projects through Alberta and British Columbia.

David then ventured out to establish his brand. First working as Fifty-Second Street Studios in 1999, and later combining his talents with Architectural partners, forming the Jackson Baker McCormick Design Group. Following the economic swing of 2008 David returned to a more nimble, small-scale business model and established David Baker Design in 2011.

Philosophy

‘Early on I came to the belief that great design can’t be limited to an architectural shell or a savvy interior - a holistic approach is needed to find the proper balance of a cohesive, well-considered design solution. In each project I weave an artistic approach and emerge with well-balanced, functional spaces. To me it’s all about how space feels. Light, color, texture and materials play into that overall feeling as much as proportion, scale and comfort.’ - David

What We Do

When you spend time with children you’re reminded to look at things closely. Finding pleasure in the smallest details like the shape of a stone or the pattern of water in the street reminds you of the gift of curiosity and the importance of discovery. Design begins this way with an open mind and a need to understand detail in everything.

Beginning at the end, DBD designs every project for the way it will function and feel. Space planning, furniture placement, lighting, function and flow are considered in the earliest stages of design. All of these systems are directed by the framing.

In our construction drawings we co-ordinate the placement of structural elements with electrical, plumbing and climate control systems to compliment each other for best results.

In The Community

Complimenting a prolific design career, volunteering in the community is meaningful for David. In 1999 he and his wife Tannis relocated to north-west Calgary where he joined the Montgomery Community Association. In 16 years as Planning Director, David oversaw the implementation of community re-development policy to see a gentrified community turn to a new, brighter and sustainable future. David continues to enjoy volunteering with the Community Association on local improvement initiatives. He coaches both minor hockey and soccer with his children.

In addition to pursuing the passion of design and the love of family and friends, David enjoys sketching, painting, photography and culinary. He makes time to appreciate everyday things.
