Project Feature - Prospect House

Prospect House was commissioned by clients who had owned the property for over a decade and wanted to preserve the bungalow lifestyle they had come to appreciate. Living in the original 1960’s single floor home had given the owner’s an appreciation for connection to the site; the ability to appreciate the spacious lot with garden level access and views.

The noun ‘prospect’ has many meanings all of which relate to the outlook for future goodness and potential. The new home would reflect personal and professional accomplishments to date and recognize the local region from which those triumphs were possible.

Situated on a busy Mount Royal corner, this Tuscan inspired enclave provides privacy, warmth and charm wrapped in a solid, secure exterior. Regionally sourced materials in carefully selected tones give this home a sense of place in this foothills location.

A colonnade of classic Tucsan columns flanks the patio plinth with broad steps sweeping down tot the intimate landscape setting below.

The entry door is encapsulated by textured patina concrete by the stone craftsmen of Tartaruga.

Bronze clavos and robust door hardware bolster old world charm.

Keeping family life private by design

Triple glazed clear Douglas Fir windows, custom crafted by master artisans of the family owned Calgary Sash and Door Company were designed to secure the interior from external noise with optimal UV and heat stability. The EIFS (acrylic stucco on polystyrene) rainscreen cladding adds insulation and sound deadening capabilities. Adding to this, full-bed Rocky Mountain stone is predominant inside and out creating dense walls for natural acoustic and heat retention qualities. Flat concrete roof tiles were selected for durability and longevity to withstand annual temperature extremes and freeze thaw cycles so unforgiving to other roofing materials in this area.

Carefully woven into the design is richness, tradition and hand crafted materials for a tactile and pleasing living space. Textures play a key role in the success of this project. Stone counters and tile were selected for their dynamic qualities; doors made of knotty Ash and millwork of Oak and Walnut were highlighted with custom blended wood stains allowing the vibrant qualities of wood grain to inspire and remind of the unpredictable natural processes that make the materials what they are.
